1. Inspect, clean, repair, prep
We inspect your bike to confirm it is a good candidate for conversion.
Points of inspection are as follows:
1) Confirm bottom bracket is compatible with the motor kit you’ve chosen. See motor kit pages for required bottom bracket specifications
2) Confirm bike frame is structurally sound.
3) Confirm brakes are suitable for the higher weight and speed of an eBike.
4) Confirm wheels are true and tires are in good shape
5) Confirm secure mounting points for the battery
6) Confirm drive train in good condition (cassette, derailleur, and chain).
7) After client gives the go-ahead to proceed with the conversion, we will make the necessary repairs. This will only occur after client has approved any additional charges that may be incurred.
2. Motor Installation
We remove the existing crankset and bottom bracket and install your motor of choice in the bottom bracket. We confirm sufficient chainring clearance against the chainstays. We then ensure the motor is secured properly to the frame, to withstand any extra vibrations encountered due to rough pavement or off-road riding.
3. Cockpit Installation
A motor control unit and display are mounted on the handlebars. If client has chosen a Bafang motor and the the brakes are cable-actuated, we will swap out the levers with the Bafang-provided levers that automatically shut off the motor when they are squeezed. If the bike has hydraulic brakes, we can install an optional hydraulic level with built in motor cut-off switch.
4. Battery Installation
Depending on the bike we are working on and the choice of battery, the installation can be one of the most challenging steps of the install. For larger batteries, the battery is installed on the downtube and secured with the mounts already on the frame. Occasionally the battery mounting hardware and the bike do not lineup, so additional mounting components would be required.
5. Speed Sensor and Shift Sensor installation
A speed sensor is installed on the left chainstay and detects the speed of the wheel, which is then fed via an electronic signal to the motor controller and display.
For Bafang motors a shift sensor is an option and installs in-line with the rear derailleur shift cable. It detects when the rider is changing gears and momentarily cuts off power to the motor to protect the drive train and can make for smoother shifts.
6. Final Tune-up and Test Ride
Once the motor kit and battery system have been installed, we make sure the bike is properly tuned to ensure smooth shifting and strong braking. We configure and customize the motor controller and display to your particular bike and riding preferences and test all systems by taking your bike for a test ride.
We will accompany you on a test ride, when you pick up your bike and answer all your questions, to make sure you fully understand how you new eBike functions.
